How Could I But Love You

Saturday nights are turning into a can't-miss experience for me.  The attendance at our little downtown street corner of the world runs around 30 or so on Saturday nights (Sunday much bigger), and we do communion every Saturday.

This week The Other Ed (who had to pull a rare Saturday night work shift) had scheduled one of our college-aged girls to lead, but early this week she had an emergency and had to drop.  After a quick email conference, we decided I'd take Saturday and The Other Ed would take Sunday.  I decided to go completely unplugged--just me on acoustic and Molly (my wife) singing with me.  We did:

Blessed Be The Name

Amazed

Revelation Song

How Could I But Love You (Tommy Walker)

There was a short prayer time, break for coffee, Greg preached, then communion.   How my life has changed!!

In case this song slipped past you, or just to nudge you if it's been awhile, here's 'How Could I But Love You'.

This post is part of Fred McKinnon's 'Sunday Set Lists' blog carnival, which you should check out.

34 Things Musicians Think Onstage

1. There’s a guy in the audience who looks just like Captain Stubing from The Love Boat.

2. If I take my guitar offstage with me after the last song, will it look like I’m leaving early?

3. Did I leave my lights on?

4. Now that the lights are on me, I think I should have taken more time with my hair this morning.

5. Did we say two times through the offering song, or three?

6. The pastor’s pant leg is caught in his sock.

Taking It A Little Too Seriously

A pastor of mine once said, "Nobody's a complete waste - you can always serve as a bad example."  So with great humility and an unchecked expansiveness of heart, I offer this post as an example of how not to handle people.

Sarah, tall, blonde, Hope College student, sang with us once in a while, back in the rented-building days at the big church.  She had a pretty good voice, but suffered from horrible stage fright.  She needed constant reassurance, trembled visibly before going onstage, but usually did a really nice job.

Finding Moments

That's what we did in the church band this morning - found a couple of great moments.  Ed The Other led the worship time, along w/Tom on bass, me on keys, Lee Bob and Lois on backup vocals.  And Lois played some rhythm toys.   We fell into a wonderful feel on a couple of tunes, and Ed just let them roll without interruption.  I love that about Ed's leading - he listens for the moments, then lets them have their way.

Rehearsal Vampires

Here's a quick story, which I'll entitle "Hot Coffee and the Wind-Driven Rehearsal Room Door".  And then a question.

By the time I'd been the Director of Instrumental Music for Ridge Point Community Church for seven or eight years, I had a pretty good horn section.   Eight or ten players sort of orbited around and through it, and I was always on the lookout for new players.  Somebody worked with somebody who knew somebody named Amanda, who was supposed to blow a pretty mean alto, and I'd finally contacted her and scheduled her to play.

Our rehearsal room was in a portable classroom next to the church building, and on this particular night the wind was blowing hard
